An exotic pet may seem to fit your jet-setting lifestyle, you may like to do things differently, or feel that it will go better with your designer clothes and gourmet food. Consider the following before you choose an exotic pet.

The term exotic pet refers to a broad classification of wild animals that are not typically found in most homes. They can include reptiles, rodents, birds, and other categories of animals. When you bring home an animal that was not bred for domestication, you are taking it from its natural, preferred environment.

Although you may think an exotic pet is the ideal accessory, taking them from their natural habitat can be difficult as they are not tame or domesticated. Exotic pets have been known to attack people, even their owners.

Care and Feeding of Exotic Animals

Do you know where to find the food your exotic pet eats? Or how much to feed it? Most wild animals catch and eat as much as they can in the wild to ensure survival. Overfeeding an exotic pet is unhealthy, and underfeeding it will add to the frustration and possible aggression of the animal. Consider also that many of them need live food – not always a pleasant task for the owner.

Your local veterinarian probably has little experience with exotic pets, who often have exotic illnesses. Finding a specialist who can treat a sick exotic pet may involve travel and considerable expense.

Do You Know the Laws Regarding Your Pet?

Depending upon the location that you reside, you may be breaking the law if you have an exotic pet in your home. Before making the investment, do some research regarding the law of exotic pet ownership in your area. You may need to purchase a special license or obtain a permit.

Some localities require that you keep your exotic pet within the confines of your property. If this is the case, make sure that you have installed secure enclosures to prevent the animal from escaping. Once they are out in the neighborhood, the unfamiliar surroundings can frighten them and provoke a normally timid animal to attack.
 
Because there is a demand for these animals, they are available to the public. In fact, there is a lucrative black market for them too. Just because you can own an exotic pet, does not necessarily mean you should. Not only is it unfair to take them out of their natural environment, it can be an onerous task to take proper care of them. Give the idea a lot of thought before you get an exotic pet.
